How derailed contemporary British television entertainment

Animation British television 1997-2010: drawing comic tradition

In the last quarter of the century, to find broadcasters countless hopes "come The Simpsons." In America this board said Eric Aaagh results in this series also received South Park and Family Guy, but things were in the UK otherwise. Past Simpsons create British (or later, South Park British) consists of testing Crapston Villas, pond life, Margaret and Bob! It is hell, Mr. Show, 2D TV, monkey dust, and I'm not an animal, throw modern, Popetown and Bromwell High, but none of them has achieved popular success of the USA's most famous brothers. What is the problem?

Tradition is dedicated to the creation of comic cartoons adult British comedy in the post-Simpson and tries to answer this specific question: The Book of the New Norris British Television Animation from 1997 to 2010.

Norris is assumed that the years 1997-2010 is the third wave of UK TV animation. The first wave began with the arrival of commercial television in the UK in 1955, while the second began in 1979 as a result of the boom in the seventies experimental animation. After Norris is part of the third wave began in 1997, at a time when the BBC 4 and moved away from the entertainment and Experimental American series are profitable affected by the work of more.

These periods also lead to changes in the political landscape of the UK correspond: the second wave lasted Conservative governments of Margaret Thatcher and John Major, while the latter include the work patterns Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. It is no coincidence, as one of the main themes of the book is the way it reacts to the news comedy.

Graphics Norris, like any tradition Music Hall on fees Bob Clampett feed Millennium UK animation, but his main concern is how the series as monkey dust itself is in line with the broader satirical British scene. Throughout the book alternates between Norris charm, a series of run-specific, he analyzed (and sometimes overanalyzes) in length, and the frustration with the shortcomings of the third wave as a whole.

Should the author of the Millennium animation with "alternative comedy" of the eighties Britain, which developed in opposition to the conservative Thatcher. Anti-racism, anti-sexist, anti-layered, loaded as an antidote against the stereotype comedy starring Benny Hill and Bernard Manning he acted.

Millennium British comedy, as described in the book is more fragmented in social commentary. The main reason for this is the concept of political correctness, which he described Norris as a concept vague, but still influential. He describes this as the third wave after the British animation politically correct (and politically incorrect) presents results in the often confusing than that: the opposition to political correctness is a strange scenario, the actors can be an act of minorities stupid anti-establishment be visualized created.

A major problem with the atheist and the British comedy twentieth century, says Norris, is obsessed with winning the lowest common denominator by nostalgia. It shows the live-action series, like my family and regression in a state of clemency in 1970, and animated series like Monkey Dust criticized for dredging tired stereotypes under the guise of the old cynical comment. While the ratification of the individual series convicted, Norris the third wave of UK TV animation as the ultimate outdated sense to say something about the world.
The book concludes with the prediction of the era of fragmentation continues, a fourth wave in motion leaves the public and distributed through the cracks of the Internet.

Animation 1997-2010 British television makes a good companion for Prime Time Animation: Animation, TV and American Culture Edited by Carol Stabile and Mark Harrison. During Stable detail successes behind the likes of The Simpsons and South Park, Norris explains how it all went wrong in a little elsewhere.

Was Basil of Baker Street by Eve Titus novelist, children's book illustrator with a focus on the mouse, I thought, Ace Detective. Mouse had in the walls of 31 Baker Street in London, home of the Ace Detective human level, in whose name I filed a (normal).

Animation and story artist Ron Clements ran through the novel before going to Disney, and he had the idea of the book Mrs. Titus to be paid in feature animation. Around the same time he discovered the house and the work of young authors Basil large color screen at work. He appeared in the studio-shot Ron Miller during a brief meeting, and this has led to the rapid delivery green light to develop the book into a movie.

That was random, because the band of young crew history are a lot of black and then paid to the door marked "Exit". (Disney veteran Burny Mattinson avoid wars in history, much to obtain approval for the development and management of Mickey Mouse featurette based on Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol. Intelligent people, Mr. Mattinson.)

John Musker, formerly head of the boiler without boiler sequence to lead the transformation in the same position on the Intrepid ... and ensure that the project was really to work. Peter Young was the supervisor of the actual story.

I cobbled together a project, with various episodes and characters in the book that the studio bought at a bargain price. The slim novel of 100 pages or more, and the house was not in love with the story, we have created a lot of new plot.

Since the beginning, the questions are: How do you see the world from a parallel rodents show visually? And as we can and prepare the characters? Soon the opening series had a two-pronged approach: Director Musker explore personal development and gags. House ahead with the youth in the ground. Kamen two sets of storyboards into existence, and focus on the gags and eccentric behavior Basil and the other on the history.

From left to right: Ron Clements, hostel and Steve Hulett work according to the "Great Mouse Detective."

From left to right: Ron Clements, the house of the youth and the power of photography Steve Hulett Randy Cartwright "Big Mouse Detective" ..

But before it was either a copy of the sequence a lot of progress, outdoor events plunged into a new unit in our history and brought the momentum Basil Baker Street to stop cracking.

The union that represents the unity of the Disney animation has made noises in the strike. Three years ago, in 1979, and the union members a brick more cartoon work from the country meet comes. Studios were the Union guaranteed for a period of two weeks taken by surprise and guarantees to keep more work in the United States after the strike. At that time it was Walt Disney Productions not participate, because the distribution of wealth has never sent to work abroad.

In 1982, this has changed. And the staff of Disney animation was in the second round of the war painted hold important functions in Southern California.

I was a member of the screen cinematic cartoon, Local 839 of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage busy (it from the mouth), but what I know about the Union was minimal. I joined the organization for six and a half years, pay an admission fee and the fees paid, and sometimes common health insurance for the union (which was excellent.) But I did not and had to deal with the Union and any idea where he was the office of the union to fulfill. The union rules? Union instead? They were wrapped in the dark secrets of the fog bank.

But now, in the late spring of 1982, I grew more involved. Need. I took Lockheed Extraordinary meeting hall of the Union of mechanics in place on Tuesday evening default. The word that held the ballot, as I drove to Buena Vista Street to attend the first meeting of my own.

Mechanical room size bowling alley and thirty three hundred and fifty members of the MPSC strange, sitting on folding chairs fill only part of the room. Graphic Designer grumpy old named Mo Gollub, president of the union and the strike veteran Disney in 1941, rose to the presidency. The weakness of the nervous system and is wearing a gray beard. I stood behind the Union Executive Board members, none of whom I knew and Trade Representative of the Union Harry "Bud" Hester of them. Bud I captured. I saw him back in the building walkways, when he was still at Disney.

Labour has a strong start with Harry and Mo questions was synopsizing: Union won on the protection of workers against the loss of employment in the studio in 1979, studios now want to take these preventive measures, so that they can make more workers. Union cinematic screen cartoonists have to "Yes" for a strike to give more weight to the negotiating table.

And submit the proposal to a vote to strike, and there were questions from the floor. The first was: ". As long as he has, but it was still a short" "How long will the strike," said Mr. Gollub?

Artists Council was slender and said that this time the studios are ready to blow, and that should not be removed syndicate. Mo dryly, "That's not true." Then someone asked if supported international (whatever that is) Union strike. "Yes, certainly," replied Missouri

Finally, plump woman with big hair and big glasses from his chair and asked if a ballot, or will it be another? Mr. Gollub No, not the final vote. More done before the members went in the work function.

(This seemed strange to me, but I was a child in the ways of the strike, Morientes scored my confusion ignorance. Was only done later discovered a member of the board Yes, it was this vote just explained. Nobody why he said, Gollub, he what did, still a corrected him.)

Finished the debate and asked to vote. Two-thirds of the amount assembled with "Yes", a third "No", and that was ever goes. Company representative Hester stepped forward and thanked the people of their own, pointing out that the vote ammunition cartoonists screen he takes to the language in the contract that would prevent runaway production to be maintained.

That is, as it turned out, was not the case. Negotiations to quickly criticized the wall of the company is flexible. Insisted company with speech fight outliers had to go. Walt Disney the only company without a strongly argued that the requirement is not restrictive language in collective agreements.

Contract and prohibit the strike ended on July 31 was cartoonists screen movement on the edge of the cliff on the rise with low too long. Enter the word that the work action was imminent, and Disney animation artist in history, and that the present day. This means that the strike of the occupations of the people? When artist and would beat up on the sidewalk lining Buena Vista Street, with posters? What does each person to eat money if the strike dragged on for a long time?

No one knows. He said he did not blow the Disney animation in 41 years.

Has finally arrived on the work of the business potential, and gathered the whole animation team at the Studio Theatre. Trade Representative Hester was explained before and why every employee to leave the country was. It was a vote "yes" in the strike, the union fought to maintain protective measures against the go work abroad and Walt Disney Productions not to accept the language. So the members of the cinematic screen are cartoon must "come out" to the negotiators give more weight.

People raise their hands, and asked questions. That the EU is negotiating with Disney during the strike (yes) hit a person can collect unemployment (No.) Is there a way to make money by setting their salaries Disney :? (Union wants to provide interest-free loans available when it was necessary.)

Settled the question-and-answer session of the three-quarters of one hour. Hester was a little nervous and uncomfortable, but he answered all questions. Despite all this, do not disappear annoyance of hearing.

Then a man in a blue jacket and a glass of expensive hair stepped to the front of the room. Forgot his name but he was a Human Resources Manager at Disney World, and he smiled and said he was there to all the staff questions and concerns answered was.

Only most of the time, he did not do it. Mr. Barber was a way to avoid the questions that rage and said he or she is not at liberty to respond or be involved with the language without double. He had presented an excellent used car salesman, but he is a spokesman for Walt Disney Productions was ugly. By the time he finished, most of the animation staff are ready to march the studio on the main entrance and waved picket signs because of the softness of the public speaker.

I still have mixed feelings about the strike, but I decided to be a good soldier walk and stand out with anyone, so it was in the studio in the narrow streets, and the parking lot, then remove the guard shack. People already moving across the sidewalk overlooking Buena Vista Street, where Hester spoke with two journalists with TV news crews.

There were mountains of posters leaning against a wall, with the men, I took a voluntary association for distribution. I caught one, Daffy Duck and the phrase "Open Season on American Cartoons" was pulled through.

"Nice looking duck," said a familiar voice. "But the studio is wrong." The date was the artist Vance Gerry, standing four feet away from me in sunglasses and pork pie hat and carrying a banner and smiling.

, I said, "Custom". "Would you have done this thing to respond?"

Vance shook his head. "The first time."

"If you think it will go?" I asked.

"I do not know. Union, but says we have to be here, so we should be here."

Steve Hulett and Jerry Vance on the first day of the strike.

Steve Hulett and Jerry Vance on the first day of the strike.

And kidnapping people for signs that he came out the door and on the long line of mobile strike ... as if they had to withdraw the strike in their lives the right. On the first day and most of the employees of Disney animation and at the entrance marched to the studio on Alameda and Buena Vista. I rose from one group to another, buzzing with adrenaline, and which never met the Disney animation team I had.

The Ministry of ink and color and is actually located in a separate building. Most of the young painter and women, and I chatted a little girl with blue eyes that seemed to be serious about supporting the union. Proved to be the daughter of the Disney animation veteran (and former President of the Union) Charlie Downs. In the next few months, it has run into a motivation for me, for the ordinary postal service.

A year later we were married.

Strike at the beginning of the 82s, most of the employees of Disney Animation, sitting in the Buena Vista Street is further believed five or ten days, and then we will all be back at work. People have for a couple of hours to walk two or three times a week (if you are wise, you may have made the morning when it was cooler). But one day bled into each other, and some artists have temporary jobs. Ruben Aquino, then the animation is in its infancy, and used his free time to work on a prolific film test profile. Jerry Vance focused on activities aside Books published a limited edition of Art.

Sit and go three weeks. Up and down Buena Vista Street go in the middle of summer with a sign chore was hot. I took a vacation already established and achieved twice the salary of the studios, and you will need weeks. . "When I came back (they do not have to pay to sit, but to punish the distribution of money for studio time, the output, a request for leave before the strike I) were, people with difficulty back and forth from the gates of Disney, but not to hear a conversation on a small cheerful picket. atmosphere was tense of optimism to the dark, especially people and exchange gossip, if we do not change close to an agreement or.

Kept plodding on time. I stake out three times a week, and go to the gym a lot, and live on vegetables and salads because the dressing was cheap. Between exercise and diet, I've lost a lot of people thought I had a weight Wasting Disease miserable.

Despite the holiday pay, began my bank account until it melts. Hungry for information, I started hanging asked if we close to an agreement in the lobby of the office building of the trade union, trade union officials. The answer was always the same: There was a lot of discussion around the table, but little progress.

An afternoon in search of a change in environments plate holder, I had to sit Hanna-Barbera. There was talk of a line on the shells artist HB homework on storyboards and Instant Messaging back in the studio for the exhibition low fat content. Union President Moe Gollub, a model maker for Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera, immerse me as we walked in our circle of dull, asks who I am and where I worked.

I told him. Then he asked me what I was doing. "I'm a writer," I said.

Gray shook his head. "It is not what we can do for you."

What ticket I, I thought.

Most actions of labor has strengths and weaknesses, and the strike cartoon cinematic screen, circa 1982, was rapidly. Towards the bottom We were more than two months. Was getting the word out about the artists from various TV animation studios were scabs working at home, but it was striking work for any Disney vertebrae. All animations and storyboards, all backgrounds and layouts and designs for the personal characteristics of the development have been sitting quietly on the desk inside the building, animation and ink and paint. Hijack not Russell studio and the graphics are missing in their rooms artists work. The studio held within its walls.

At the same time, the members of the Disney outer walls were impatient. A few artists have gone for the management of the studio, and asks if there is a possibility that they can return to work. Management again. Studios in the studio lawyers, who said to them, they do not give up their union membership and cross the picket line ... without fear of reprisal

Enter information through the ranks of the attackers, such as pork or goose. Union leaders and reach to collapse solidarity, rushed to a meeting on the second floor of the screen to keep living cartoonists. Disney showed people (myself included) so in droves.

The room was full, and crackling tension with. The aide, the Disney group said is found to cross the picket lawyers. I have several artists union lawyer asked if it is true that people leave cartoonists of the screen and work without penalty. This was followed by a long and thoughtful pause with the word "Yes."

The next day I began resignation letters from Disney employees who. In the Union The rule, a day after the company's representative and head of Bud Hester Mo Gollub, just ordered a meeting with the International President Walter Dale, call a strike immediately and send them all to work. Hester said Gollub and forget about trying to keep the article outliers, and negotiate a deal that can get. (In other words: "Do not give it go, do not collect $ 200")

I was the existence lies in the cartoon of the screen, and I'm sitting in the hotel lobby when he returned Mo bud and the Association President Dale. Both seemed to ashes. Hester said when asked what happened. He had a hard time finding the words.

"So we have to do?" I said. "It's over?"

Bud and Mo nodded. They seem ready to cry.

He added: "We have nothing to show for it gets?"

"Nothing," Bud said.

He entered eighty-six artists from Disney cartoonists cinema, and again announced to work two days before the union that the strike is over. I was among the fifty percent of the employees who are not resigned.

Designer '82 was the longest strike the infamous edition, 1941, and attended a greater number of people. But injuries do not go as deep, and there was less residual anger and hostility. Last year, in 1982 some of the artist feuding for years.

To work after eight days all again, I was sitting on the balcony, when her lunch Commissioner moderator, who resigned and went back inside and came early for me and the head down.

"You're mad at me?" He asked. "Come back to before it's finished?"

"No, Phil, I'm not good. Everyone does what they feel they must do. Whats the point that evil?, Life goes on."

He seemed relieved. "Well, then," he said. "Thank you."

Phil was never again strike the topic to broach. He is now retired and out of business. Maybe he forgot that he resigned his membership in the Union in the first place.

Life goes on.

IDEA

A few years ago, my grandmother I lost to cancer. We were very close, but because of my studies, I do not see often. I knew she was sick, but I only heard she was dying, it was too late. As in the hospital and I was already in a deep coma. I was told that I still have a chance to say goodbye, to tell her, and she can still hear me, but I just can not. What is put in front of me were not my grandma. For me it was a terrible sight. After that, I was very confused. Over and over again began to disturb his death nightmares. In these dreams, there were all kinds of places surreal, like the wings of theaters, Underwater World, and a field of flowers. I thought that these dreams and these places are a good starting point for a short period while avoiding to be a biography, too, and something I do not want at this time was.

Tools and processes

I use the Cintiq and move the Pro Toon Boom Animation, because I like the look of it vector. It gave me more freedom in the composition, the look that you want. With their black shapes animate relatively quickly, but is essentially a decision graph. Creates a connection between these two characters. All have money with traditional media such as acrylic and pencil, and then edited in Photoshop. With the help of some friends, I have also used the 3D reference point.

Challenges and Experiences

It was very difficult, a story that was very personal to tell. Like I said, I originally did not want anything too biography had to be done. But how do I find the slow stage of history step, I realized that the final draft was in fact the essence of what happened to me. I think even I can not answer to the first question is clear, if I did not go trough the whole process. It has helped me to structure my thoughts and me to accept the situation and death.

I was afraid that this story would be cheesy and cliche, and it's my grandmother as a monster is from the injustice of someone missing me so damn good. But my friends and my teachers really encouraged them to explore after the battle, and I'm happy they did. However, I kept with the fear that the story a year or more experience for the audience, and very difficult to easy for everyone. It was about the right balance between the original and understandable. My teachers, especially my friend (who is also the manager) helped me a lot in him. As the first screening of one of my friends, they did not say so, because Bambi felt, I feel very honored, haha!

In terms of pure film, I learned how hard it is to be a director, and at the same time managing all these tasks. She says that some directors films grow naturally, but this was the case for me. I struggled with the development of many of the pieces in the right place. This was especially difficult when you are working on things that you are less familiar with. Like to communicate with my music composers. We had a real discussion, but I think that it is necessary to achieve a good result.

Inspirations

Not mentioned: I love nature. Now the corny and cheesy, seem right? But this is something I really shared my grandmother and together. It's one thing to happen again in all my films, nature and animals. If it were not for the animation, and I want to follow him for a job in the BBC nature Sir David Attenburough!

Where do you see within five years

After filming for me, I would really work with others on interesting projects. This could be short-lived, functions, or anything in between. I love drawing, as long as I can continue to do so, I'll be happy. Animation-wise, there are many good things in Belgium and Europe at the moment, so I'm looking forward to it!

He says he uses the robot more than was originally planned. "In conversations and interviews with the new staff, very helpful to look into the eyes of the people and on the screen of their own," says Brady. "It is very strange, a robot that can run independently and surprise people in their offices, but a bit of fun to be a part of it." The best thing to use it is to him that allows him to spend more time at home.

The aide said Mu Chen: "It's a little scary when Colin suddenly appears from behind, but fortunately there is not much." But she says she does not talk Colin strange by the device, as is the habit of using FACE TIME applications from Apple.

2014 participants Wholesale

With eight months of last year almost, we begin a clearer idea of who will have the key competitors in the price next season. On the one hand it was a year of slow animation without new versions of Pixar, lighting and Sony Pictures Animation. On the other hand, there were more and more attention to the originals relatively large studios, including LEGO movie, and boxing Rolls, and the book of life.

It is premature as to who is nominated for Annie, Golden Globe and Oscar, predict. But it is not very difficult to distinguish between the main competitors in the studio this time. Alphabetical order, these are:

  • Big Hero 6 (Disney)
  • Book of Life (Reel FX / Fox)
  • And boxing Rolls (Laika / Focus Features)
  • How to Train Your Dragon 2 (Dreamworks / Fox)
  • Lego movie (Animal Logic / Warner Bros.)
  • Song of the Sea (Cartoon Salon / Gkids)
  • Story of Princess Kaguya (Studio Ghibli / Toho / Gkids)

Think it was not published five of these films in the United States, and supports their status depends on how they are received. Monday train only obvious candidate on the list and to Train Your Dragon 2 and LEGO movie, which earned high marks from both critics and audiences.

In addition to these major competitors, there are many other films that have to probably qualify. Here is a ten other versions will likely be discussed during the awards season:

Overall it was a good year for the office of American competitors animation with unique and international efforts and strong, independent alike. In the absence of a solid favorite, and frozen the dominance of last year, the competition promises to be intense in the coming months, and put more attention on some very valuable films.
